Holy Kaabah in Mecca

About the Destination

Makkah al-Mukarramah is the holiest city for Muslims located in the rocky valley region of the Hijaz, Saudi Arabia. More than just an ordinary city, Makkah is the spiritual epicenter of the Islamic world; the birthplace of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and the location where the revelation of the Qur'an was first revealed. The center of all life in this city is the Grand Mosque. In the center stands the Kaaba, a cube-shaped monument covered with black cloth (kiswah) which is the mecca for billions of Muslims throughout the world. At all times, day and night, the mataf area around the Kaaba is never empty of people performing tawaf (circling seven times), creating a religious atmosphere that is very moving. Geographically and historically, Mecca is surrounded by hills which hold a record of prophethood. Among them are Jabal Nur, where the Hira Cave is located (the location of the first revelation), and Jabal Tsur, where the Prophet was hiding during the hijrah. Mecca is also closely connected to the areas of Mina, Arafat, and Muzdalifah, the culminating sites of the Hajj pilgrimage. Today, Mecca is a city that never sleeps, bustling year-round. It hosts millions of pilgrims from all over the world who come one after another to perform the Umrah pilgrimage. This makes Mecca an extraordinary melting pot, uniting the diversity of races, languages, and cultures of humanity under a common intention and belief. Infrastructure-wise, Mecca today presents a contrasting blend of ancient spiritual heritage and modern splendor. The Abraj Al Bait skyscraper complex (one of which is the Makkah Clock Tower) stands towering alongside the Grand Mosque, housing state-of-the-art hotel and transportation facilities to accommodate the ever-increasing number of pilgrims. Despite the constant refinement of modern architecture, Mecca's essence remains unchanged: a peaceful holy city, a place of purification for the soul, and the pinnacle destination for a Muslim's spiritual journey.
